The lonely flower

http://lucyfagellapottery.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/flower-vase1.jpg

Even the flower that has fallen from its bunch evokes feelings of loneliness.

Chapter 6

This is the final chapter in the novel Of Mice and Men. Lennie is always worrying about George leaving him. Lennie needs George to survive. Whenever people mention George leaving him, Lennie gets very scared and sad. " He's gonna beat hell outa you an' then go away an' leave you." said the rabbit. ( Steinbeck, 102, 1937) " He won't," Lennie cried frantically. " He won't do nothing like that. I know George. Me an' him travel together." ( Steinbeck, 102, 1937) Lennie always talks about leaving George to live on his own. Lennie says this to make George feel bad. But George is smart enough to know that Lennie would never leave. Even Lennie knows he would never leave. " I know Aunt Clara ma'am. I'll go right off in the hills an' I'll fin' a cave an' I'll live there so i won't be no more trouble to George." said Lennie. ( Steinbeck, 101, 1937) Aunt Clara Replied sharply. " You jus' say that. You're always sayin' that, an' you know well you ain't never gonna do it. You'll jus' stick around an' stew the b'Jesus outa George all the time." ( Steinbeck, 101, 1937) As much as Lennie says he will leave George, everyone knows that Lennie would never leave him.

After Lennie killed Curley's wife everything went down hill for Lennie, George, and Candy. Near the end of the book, when all the guys found out Lennie killed Curley's wife they all went on a search to find him and kill him. George knew that Curley would make Lennie suffer and die in pain. So George made the toughest decision of his entire life. George decided that he would kill Lennie. Before George killed Lennie, George had Lennie turn around and picture their dream. George wanted Lennie to die with a happy feeling in his heart. George was talking about the land because he wanted to have one more feeling of hope, and he wanted to have his last thought of escaping loneliness. George knew after he pulled the trigger and killed Lennie that their dream would be over. After George killed Lennie, he was heart broken. George had no family and his only friend was the person he just killed. George knew his life would never be the same without Lennie. There would always be loneliness in his heart. George and Candy's last hope to escape loneliness was just killed.

Throughout the entire novel, loneliness cannot be removed. No matter how hard they try to change and do different things, loneliness always rears its ugly head. Lennie, George, and Candy had an amazing plan to escape loneliness. They tried to avoid all the obstacles that were presented before them. But in the end loneliness out smarted their plan and won. Lennie made one bad choice, and that choice destroyed their entire plan to overcome loneliness. Overall George's life would never be the same without Lennie.

Stop the violence By: Nick Biagini

http://www.yessy.com/art/?view=235290&skw=Nick+biagini

This is another painting by Nick Biagini. In this painting the boy is curled up and it looks like he is trapped in a box all alone. The boy everyday feels like he is in a box left helpless by the feelings of loneliness. Being alone also can give you thoughts about suicide. Above the kid there is a broken gun which represents that violence is not the answer to loneliness. The small glimmer of light inside the box is symbolic of the hope that always exists.

This is a painting by Nick Biagini. In this painting there is a boy who is crying, and is all alone. The boy has no one. The black on the sides represent darkness coming closer and closer to him. Every second he becomes more and more lonely. The writing that is on the side of the painting is in Aramaic. It is a prayer in Aramaic. Loneliness brings the darkness out of everyone but prayer can extinguish it.

You cannot escape from loneliness

Chapter 5

Curley who is the boss's son is married to a woman. This woman in the novel has no name, she is refered to as Curley's wife. The novel makes her seem portrayed as a pet. Since they call her Curley's wife, it seems like she belongs to Curley. Throughout the entire novel Curley and his wife are always asking where each other are. It seems as if they are actually trying to hide from each other. Curley always thinks she is with other men on the ranch. Curley has no trust in her. They got married not because they loved each other but because they were alone. They needed to feel part of something. " So I married Curley. Met him out to the Riverside Dance Palace that same night. I don't like Curley. He ain't a nice fella." said Curley's wife.( Steinbeck, 88-89, 1937)

Curley's wife is one of the loneliest characters in the novel. She has no friends on the ranch, and she is the only lady on the ranch. Curley's wife is always flirting with the other guys on the ranch. She doesn't do this to be harmful, but only because she is so lonely and has no one to talk to. Lennie was in the barn petting the puppies. Curely's wife went into the barn and started to talk to Lennie. Lennie didn't want to talk to her because he was following George's orders. Curely's wife didn't want any trouble, all she wanted to do was have a real conversation with someone. " Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely. You can talk to people, but i can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How'd you like not to talk to anybody." said curley's wife.( Steinbeck, 86, 1937) I feel bad for Curley's wife as she has no one to talk to, and she has no friends. She must feel lonely living with Curley.

While in the barn Lennie was touching Curley's wife's hair. Lennie has an uncontrollable desire to touch soft, and smooth things. Curley's wife wanted Lennie to stop touching her dress, but Lennie didn't stop. Curley's wife started to yell and Lennie got confused so he grabbed on to her and didn't let go. Eventually Lennie started to shake her, and he broke her spine, and she died. When George found out Lennie did this, he knew this dream he had made with Lennie and Candy was over. George knew that what Lennie did was going to change their lives. When George told Candy what Lennie did, Candy even knew that his only chance to leave the ranch and live a normal life was just ruined. " You an' me can get that little place, can't we George? You an' me can go there an' live nice, can't we, George? Can't we?" said Candy.( Steinbeck, 94, 1937)
Candy was devastated with the fact that he would have to still live on the ranch.

Lennie doesn't realize what is coming for him. Because of what Lennie had done, this was going to change the lives of everyone on the ranch--especially George and Candy's life. As much as they try to get away from loneliness it always comes running back to them.

Mr. Lonely

The title of this song explains it all!
This song relates to almost every character in the novel Of Mice and Men. All the characters feel lonely. They all just want to go home and live a normal life.

loneliness

 Light is dark and one,
It's song is un-sung.
It's own fate it has sealed.
The wounds it bears has never healed.

Walks alone does he,
Perhaps he's alot like me,
Blinded by confusion and frustration.
For it never sees the light before night sets.

It carries on with eyes wide shut,
In a mindless rut.
Feeling rotten to the core,
Waiting for the day, when it's pain is no more.....

The Lonely Man

Being lonely makes everything feel and look black, and ugly. Loneliness can ruin someone's life.

http://www.aremusic.co.uk/sub/kevankoya/images/loneliness_man_under_tree.jpg

Chapter 4

Loneliness hurts everyone; some more than others. In chapter 4 one of the characters that deals with loneliness is Crooks. Crooks deals with loneliness because of his colour. Crooks is the only black person on the ranch. But what makes Crooks situation even worse is the fact that he is also crippled. Crooks is the only worker on the ranch who has his own room. To have your own room is a huge deal, but not in Crooks' case. Crooks only has his own room because he is black. Crooks is not welcomed in the bunk house with all the other workers. So Crooks get his own room in the barn area. "Scattered about the floor in Crooks room were a number of personal possessions; for, being alone, Crooks could leave his things about, and being a stable buck and a cripple, he was more permanent that the other men. This room was swept and fairly neat, for Crooks was a proud, aloof man. He kept his distance and demanded that other people keep theirs." ( Steinbeck, 66-67, 1937) Crooks seems to deal with the loneliness, but deep inside the loneliness is killing him.

Lennie, Crooks, and Candy are the outcasts on the ranch. When George, Slim, Carlson, and Curley went to the whore house they left behind Lennie, Candy, and Crooks. Lennie, Candy, and Crooks must have felt badly about themselves when they knew that they were left behind because they were different. Lennie, Candy, and Crooks all have something which makes them different and also makes them lonelier. Lennie has a mental disability, which makes him unable to interact as well with the people on the ranch. Candy is old and has only one hand. Candy's age makes the rest of the workers feel unable to interact with him. Crooks is black and a cripple. Crooks' colour separates him from everyone. Also being crippled makes him less able to move around and interact with the workers. George, Slim, Carlson, and Curley should not have left George, Candy, and Crooks behind. Everyone is already lonely as it is; they should not make some people feel even lonelier than they already are.

Being friendly and inviting someone out even if they are different, can make that person feel so much better about themselves. Everyone on the ranch is dealing with loneliness in some way, shape or form. But Candy, Lennie, and Crooks are the loneliest people on the ranch. They face loneliness every minute of their lives.

Swedish Friends

This link deals with loneliness. The girl feels and looks invisible to everyone. She feels all alone. When that girl went beside her to eat lunch with her, she no longer felt lonely. All she needed was someone to speak to her; all she wanted was a friend. When the girl spoke to her she no longer looked invisible. It was like when she was alone she had no life in her, and when she was not alone she had life in her.

The smallest things can be the greatest things.

This is a photo of someone on a canoe, all alone in the middle of a lake. The person on the canoe must feel lonely. The sunset in the background won't make him less lonely but it will make him appreciate life. It will help him to realize that some people around the world are worse off than you. If he just enjoys the sunset his feelings will definitely change from negative to positive.

Chapter 3

In chapter 3 there are so many scenes of loneliness it saddens me. " Him and me was both born in Auburn. I knowed his Aunt Clara. She took him when he was a baby and raised him up. When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out workin'. Got kinda used to each other after a little while." said George.( Steinbeck, 40, 1937) When Lennie was a baby his aunt took him in which most likely means his parents died. Lennie was not raised with the male figure in his life so the only other guy he new was George. When his Aunt died Lennie had absolutely nobody anymore, except George. Lennie and George were both lonely so they stuck together everywhere they went. George knew Lennie wasn't bright, so George would take advantage of Lennie.

"I used to have a hell of a lot of fun with 'im. used to play jokes on 'im 'cause he was too dumb to take care of 'imself. But he was too dumb even to know he had a joke played on him. I had fun. Made me seem God Damn smart alongside of him. Why he'd do any damn thing I tol' him. If i tol' him to walk over a cliff, over he'd go. That wasn't so damn much fun after a while. he never got mad about it, neither. I've beat the hell outa him, and he coulda bust every bone in my body jus' with his han's, but he never lifted a finger against me. tell you what made me stop that. One day a bunch of guys was standin' around up on the Sacramento River. I was feelin' pretty smart. I turns to Lennie and says, 'jump in.' an' he jumps. Couldn't swim a stroke. he damn near drowned before we could get him. An' he was so damn nice to me for pullin' him out. Clean forgot i told him to jump in. Well, i ain't done nothing like that no more." said George.(Steinbeck, 40, 1937)

George did some very mean things to Lennie, just because Lennie wasn't bright. Even after George beat him up, almost made him drown, after all the pranks, and jokes Lennie still always thanked and wanted to be with George. Lennie didn't care about what George did to him. All Lennie cared about was being with someone. Lennie needed George, and Lennie had no one else so even though George did all those things to him, he was always still nice to George. George realized what he did to Lennie was awful and horrible. George ended up doing the right thing by treating Lennie fairly, and by allowing Lennie to travel and work with him. All Lennie wanted was someone to be like a brother to him and always provide him with some company.

Lennie and many other characters such as Candy used animals to give them company. Lennie is always going around petting and holding animals. He was petting a dead mouse, just to give him comfort and to let him feel warmth. Lennie also pets the baby puppy. He pets the puppy because it is small and he feels less lonely when he pets something living. Lennie is also always talking about getting rabbits. Lennie loves furry animals because it gives him something to love, and talk to."Well-hell! I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup. I herded sheep with him. You wouldn't think it to look at him now, but he was the best damn sheep dog i ever seen." said Candy.( Steinbeck, 44, 1937) Candy's only real friend is his dog. Candy has been living on the ranch so long. He has no family, no friends; all he has is his dog. He loves his dog with all his heart. The characters have animals because it is much easier for them to interact and to be less lonely with the animals.

Lennie and George have a dream about buying their own house and living together. They want to be able to feel like they are in control and are the boss of them selves. They will buy what they want, eat what they want, and do whatever they want. " George, how long's it gonna be till we get that little place an' live on the fatta the lan'." said Lennie. ( Steinbeck, 56, 1937) All George and Lennie want is to be able to live on their own and own something for themselves. They want to feel like a regular person and live in a house. They want to see how it feels not to be lonely. This dream of theirs is a dream almost every ranch worker has. People everywhere all want to feel normal, and feel unlonely. Candy hears George and Lennie talking about this place. Candy wants to join them. Candy has nothing; he has no family, no friends, no house. He lost the only thing he had which was his dog. Just this alliance the three have, gives Candy less of a feeling of loneliness.

In this chapter, Candy and Lennie both use pets to make them feel less lonely. The animals they pet give them a feeling of love, and warmth. These feelings they get from the animals make them feel less lonely. A single pet can make someones life that much better, and that much more enjoyable and fulfilling. The smallest things in life are sometimes the greatest things for a person.

Chapter 2

In chapter 2 they have arrived on the ranch. The loneliness now deals with Lennie, George and the other characters on the ranch. While on the ranch for not even 1 day yet, Lennie already feels like he isn't welcomed. "I don't like this place George. This ain't no good place. I wanna get outa here." Lennie cried out suddenly.( Steinbeck, 32, 1937) Lennie feels like he doesn't belong on the ranch, he feels like he isn't liked, and he feels lonely. Lennie is a special person, who sometimes makes people treat him like an outcast. The feeling of being an outcast is not a nice one, and for the first time Lennie feels that way and he doesn't like it. Even George doesn't like the feeling he gets on the ranch. He feels like an outcast because he is with people he doesn't know at all. In general, living on a ranch isn't a nice feeling. You are with people you don't know, which makes you feel lonely. You also feel somewhat embarrassed because you aren't smart enough to get a regular job. You also may feel degraded because you are sometimes treated like slaves.

When Lennie and George arrived on the ranch, the boss was already upset with them. He was upset with them because he thought they were going to arrive the night before. George and Lennie weren't able to arrive that night because they had no ride to the ranch so they had to walk for 10 miles. " Bus driver give us a bum steer. We hadda walk ten miles. Says we was here when we wasn't. We couldn't get no rides in the morning." said George.( Steinbeck, 21, 1937) Even though the bus driver cheated George and Lennie they still could have gotten to the ranch the night before if they had a ride. But George and Lennie have no family or friends so they couldn't get a ride. Loneliness affects people in so many ways. In that example loneliness affects them because they couldn't get to where they needed to go. If they had family and friends and weren't lonely, they could have called someone they knew and asked for a ride. But their loneliness restricted them from being able to make a call.

In this chapter, Lennie and George have just arrived on the ranch. Lennie already felt lonely and not welcomed. Lennie just wanted to feel like everyone else and be treated like everyone else.

Loneliness is the greatest disease in our society.

This is a photo of a teen all alone in a dark room with just some light. This photo represents loneliness. The way that teen must be feeling is horrible. All he truly needs is someone to talk to and for someone just to give him some company.

Chapter 1

In chapter 1 there are many scenes in which the characters face loneliness.George and Lennie have no one but each other. They do everything together. Even though Lennie bothers and frustrates George so much, George always stays with Lennie.
" O.K.- O.K. I'll tell ya again. I ain't got nothing to do. Might jus' as well spen' all my time tellin' you things and then you forget 'em and i tell you again." Said George.( Steinbeck, 4, 1937) George sounds frustrated and tired of Lennie. I don't understand why he just doesn't leave Lennie and live his own life? I think George doesn't leave Lennie because even though Lennie frustrates him he still gives George company, and someone to talk to. George knows if he didn't have Lennie he would be so lonely because he has no family or friends. George also knows he can't leave Lennie because if Lennie doesn't have George, Lennie wont be able to survive. Lennie isn't the brightest man, so he needs George to help him and guide him in everyday life. "But not us! An' why? Because.... because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why." Said Lennie. ( Steinbeck, 14, 1937)

George was getting so frustrated with Lennie, Lennie was able to sense it. " If you don't want me i can go off in the hills an' find a cave. I can go away any time." said Lennie .( Steinbeck, 12, 1937) Lennie was trying to make George feel bad about the way he has been treating Lennie. But Lennie and George both knew that Lennie was 100% bluffing. Lennie wouldn't be able to survive on his own. He would die without George because Lennie needs George to give him company but also to supply him with food and shelter. Lennie wouldn't be able to live alone.

On their way to the ranch, George says something to Lennie about loneliness. "Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place. They come to a ranch an' work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know they're poundin' their tail on some other ranch. They ain't got nothing to look ahead to." said George. ( Steinbeck, 15, 1937) What George said to Lennie is true. Guys that work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world. They have nothing. They are so used to being lonely, they can't just stay on one ranch. They need to keep traveling because that's what they are used to. In the time that this book takes place if you are not born into a rich family or you already had land from past relatives, you are going to have to work just to live somewhere. Most ranch workers work on ranches because they have no family. When someone has no friends or family they get very lonely. Lennie and George are still very lonely but they are somewhat lucky because at least they travel together, and they have someone to talk to and to give eachother company.

Already, just in chapter one Lennie and George have a rough and lonely life. They are always travelling around. They have no place to live, and they have no one but eachother. They are so used to the loneliness, it doesn't even occur to them that much anymore. Loneliness is such a painful feeling. This chapter had so much Loneliness, I even felt that lonely sensation after I read it......

Introduction

My name is Matthew Biagini. I go to Chaminade College School in Toronto, Ontario. This is my first time creating a blog. This blog I have created was made for my English ISU. The theme I have chosen for the novel, Of Mice and Men is Loneliness. Loneliness is a recurrent theme in this novel. Loneliness is one of the most harmful feelings for humans. In the novel almost all the characters face loneliness. They try or have once tried to get away from the loneliness but it is too difficult; it always finds its way back to the characters. In my blog I will discuss how loneliness is displayed in the novel. For every chapter I will write a post about the scenes and characters who face loneliness in that chapter.

I hope you enjoy!
